DVD to Memory stick (usb)

I am running win.8 on this laptop which has a DVD reader/writer along with the usual usb ports, what I want to do is copy a movie my friend lent me on a DVD disc to a memory stick so that I can watch it later but I haven't a clue how to, can anybody tell me in simple terms please.

this would be what's commonly known as copyright infringement and is illegal.

If it's a 'real' DVD, then it most likely has some sort of copy protection on it. There are loads of DVD ripping software available (www.downloads.com), but the quickest thing would probably be to download the movie from a torrent website such as www.thepiratebay.org. Once downloaded you could just drop the file onto your memory stick.

Thanks for your input chuckfickens, yes we all know that technically it's illegal but it's not as though I want to copy it to sell it, I just want to watch it, & if you can HONESTLY say that you have never put music onto a tape cassette or CD or played a radio at work or other public place without a performing rights licence then sorry I just don't believe you!

Thank you for a sensible answer docspock, I will have a go.
If you want to transfer the film in its original format to a mem stick simply open the DVD you will see 2 folders, (Audio-ts + video -ts) then simply right click each folder, Copy, then paste to your memory stick (If the video is macro protected then you carnt do this)
