Missing files

Can anyone solve this one?
Some software on my PC - call it software X - has files I`ve created, saved in a folder - call it folder Y.
Accessing the software X via the software`s desktop icon, then opening folder Y, all my files are there. I can can activate them and use them on my PC quite normally. But they will not copy/paste or drag/drop to any other location, meaning I cannot back them up on disk.
If I access the software via - computer>drive C>prog. files>software X>folder Y, then the folder Y is empty. Any suggestions please? Thanks.

Sounds like a file sharing app ... that locks the files in that folder.
If you dont have the program running, you should be able to find/move them

In Windows you can have hidden files. Files are in the folder, but have the Windows "hidden" bit on.

You can change Windows to display hidden files in Windows explorer.

Not sure if this is what is happening in your case.

1. I`ve got no file sharing on PC
2. I`ve enabled all hidden files.
3. It`s irrelevent really, but the software is NoteWorthy Software - for music notation, folder Y being finished music files. The problem only occurred within the last week.
It must be something I`ve inadvertently tweaked on the PC. Make no mistake - the files are there when I open the software with the desktop icon. But going to Prog files then opening software from there, the folder is there ok but is empty.

I'm doubting the files are really stored in a subfolder of the program directory (it would be a very unusual and unwise place to store users data)

you can look under tools > options > folders in noerworthy and it will say where the default location for the files are, or you can try doing a windows search on your C drive for files called *.nwc and it should find all noteworthy data files for you.

Eureka! Did a search as you suggested, found two locations - C/prog files/nwc. Tried to open these but "Path does not exist" came up. Another location was - C/users/me(711)/app data/local/virtual store/prog files/nwc. This was where the stuff was located.
I wonder why there are 2 prog. files in different locations? They must be different, as one contained the files, the other didn`t! Anyway many thanks again Chuck.

One final thing - how can I re-route the folder to the regular prog files?

I really would not suggest using any location in program files for storing your personal files.

I would create a new folder in your main documents folder (so in c:\user\711\ ) somewhere called something like noteworthy and then, when in noteworthy, goto tools > options > folders and set the path to save files to the folder you have just created.

If you also move all the files in the current working folder (the ones you've just found) to the new folder it will keep everything in one place and you won't run the risk of deleting your files if you ever un-install the software.
