Can anyone explain to me why my computer does not recognise DVD-RW discs? I can record satisfactorily on CD-R, but with the DVD my computer advises me to "insert a disk" when there is a disk already in place.

Firstly, does your computer actually contain a DVD-RW optical device? Most modern ones do, but older ones might not...
Is the drive a DVD re-writer?

It may just be a CD writer and a DVD reader.
