Seems like the basic drivers are included in Windows 7, so plug in your printer and let it install the driver supplied with Windows.

Then there seems to be an "add on" module from Canon that you install ON TOP of the basic driver in Windows 7.

Download it from here

You need to install the drivers before you plug the printer in.

If you done it the other way round the first time unplug the printer, goto programs and features in the control panel and remove the canon software, then install the software again and don't plug the printer in until the software tells you to.

Seems Chuck and I are giving conflicting info.

If you go to the link I supplied to does say it is an "add-on" module, and that the basic module is supplied with Windows 7.

I still stand by what I said, let Windows 7 install the basic module, then install the add-on module you have downloaded from the Canon web site.
I'll be honest VHG, I didn't check if the drivers are built into windows7

Mine was a generic answer to the main problem people have when installing USB printers.

Hi thanks for all your suggestions I unzipped the add on before plugging in the printer and the screen said this was a 34 bit programme and not a 64 bit so it still would not install so looks like im stuffed with tis one, on the microsoft website it says that this printer is compatible but just not for me
According to Canon the add-on software is suitable for both 32 and 64 bit Windows 7.
If it's not actually a driver (which is implied by the description "add-on"), then it should install, the only difference being that will be installed in the "Program Files(x86)" folder instead of "Program Files".
Canon have been having problems with 64 bit Windows7 as is a few other printer companies. I would suggest you ring Canon and have them sort it out for you over the phone as they sometimes have a generic driver they they can use to fix your problem .I have done this with HP at times and have fixed my problem.
