Putting data on to a hard drive

I run a programme called Family Tree Legends and I bought an external hard drive so that I can back it up along with other things. How is the best way to put it on the hard drive, I have been clicking and dragging but it tells me that it couldn't transfer it all and some data could be lost !! This also deletes some of the original things that I have recently put on the programme ! Please help.

Have you tried making a backup file to the external disc?

Should be able to do this from your options or look under the file menu
