DVD writer

My laptop (an old Acer Aspire 2000) has a built in CD writer that plays DVDs but will not write a DVD. Can anybody recommend a usb powered DVD writer that is not too expensive, that I can buy off of amazon and WILL WORK, the reason I ask is because I got one from amazon a little while ago it was advertised as a DVD Writer both + & - it played discs but would not would not write them nor was it recognised as a writer by any of my burning programs. so I would appreciate any recommendations before I get duped again.
