how to view laptop on TV

I want to view my laptop on the TV via a HDMI cable and as far as I can see all I need to do is join them together with the HDMI cable but when I do the laptop is not visable!!! is there something else I need to do. I have tried all the av 1, 2, etc and the HDMI thingy too. Any guidance would be welcome. thankz in advance vinnyk

You need to switch on the HDMI output.

You can either do that in the properties of the graphics driver, or there will be a hot key combination that will do it, which will be hold down FN and then press one of the function keys, which function key differs from laptop to laptop though. have a look for extra symbols on the function keys for anything that looks like two screens and it will probably be that key.

Ok, so you've told the telly to receive input from its HDMI port.

But you also need to tell the laptop to send output to its HDMI port. How you do that will depend on your laptop. You could try reading the manual (as you've elected to keep the make and model secret).

thanks Chuck your advice worked just fine, I'm now working on the sound (none) and resizing the screen but thanks for your help very much appreciated vink

Swap the playback device in the audio properties to the HDMI device (it may be called ATI or nvidia audio depending on your type of card)
