I'm currently unable to activate the shortcut icon for IE8 on my desktop; the minimised windows show on the taskbar when I click on them, but won't maximise, and I have to open IE via 'All programs'. Is this anything to do with last night's updates? And is there an easy way of restoring it, please?
NB I know what you all think about IE, but this is the question I need to be answered, not encouragement to change to Firefox or Google Chrome.

When it minimizes, have you tried right clicking on it and choosing maximize?

Thank you, tboo. I had right-clicked, but didn't look at the options because in the past I've never needed to do that because it has always appeared immediately. It works, of course - now I feel an idiot (not for the first time!)
When you select it from all programmes, right click and send to desktop as a shortcut. This will at least save you going into all programmes again, even though it may be a different icon.

Thanks Postdog, I've done that now. I never think of right-clicking - I wonder how many other little gems I'm missing!
