This is a very personal statement. While those of you who know me could never, by any stretch of the imagination, call me a homophobic, I will never again shop in Tesco.

Tesco funds Gay Pride but drops
support for Cancer Research

Tesco has sparked outrage after dropping its support for the Cancer Research 'Race for Life', and announcing shortly after that it would now become a headline sponsor of Britain's largest gay festival.

There is no comparison between the two.
One needs all the money it can get for research into a cure for a deadly disease.
The other should be self financing. What benefits are to be gained for mankind
from a gay festival ?

Im not homophobic either but I can see your point, although gay pride is important I think cancer research is more important.
That's a ditto from me
Tesco supports far more than one charity, it's not a swap.

I don't choose a supermarket for their charitable causes. In fact Tesco is donating £30,000 to the Gay Pride, which in terms of corporate sponsorship and corporate charitable donations is positively measly.
Message to Tesco - ''Very Little Help''
I generally dont jump to conclusions so before I judge I would be interested to know the reasons behind their actions, but for sure, this decision certainly isnt going to give them a high placing in the popularity contest.
How many of you knew that Tesco was giving donations to Cancer Research and how many of you chose to shop there specifically because of that?
I suggest you have a read of this thread before you become 'outraged'

Me too. If we haven't personally been affected by cancer, we all know people who have. Cancer affects everyone in some way. Tesco has made a very poor decision here.
is there a link for this story? I can see many charities named on the Tesco site.

I heartily dislike Tesco too - but mainly because of their retail dominance and the bland uniformity which they impose on our shopping choices.

I therefore find myself in an uncomfortable position having to defend them on this.

They support thousands of charities (both locally and nationally) each year - you could doubt their motives, but that is another argument.

There is a natural 'churn' effect as some charities come onto the roster and others leave. All major corporate donors work in this way to spread the money around and diversify their image.

There is NO specific link between the arrival of Gay Pride and the departure of Cancer Research - other than in the mindset of the usual media suspects (hello Daily Mail).

Cancer Research UK, which gave no sign of disappointment about losing Tesco’s support, is looking for a new partner for the Race for Life. Emma Gilbert, who organises the event, said the partnership ‘came to a natural end’ for both parties.

In fact Tesco raised over £7m for the CLIC cancer charity last year.
You can see the £30k for Gay Pride is no comparison.
Could it be that Tesco is donating heavily to another equally deserving cause instead? like hc4361 said, "its not a swap!"
I shop there regardless, nice to see from the links provided they do give a lot of money to charity.
The story has a daily mail slant. What else do you expect?
Next year's Charity of the Year of Tesco is Alzheimer's Society, and once again their aim is at least £5m. A very worthy cause indeed.
And who are we to dictate which good causes the contribute to?
I wonder if the original story was a daily mail story? they are known for only publishing half the facts to put a slant on an article.
lol ditto ummm
It was a 10 year deal from the start and has simply come to an end.

I'm sure people being told they have to be outraged by this will make it so much easier for race for life to find another sponsor, everyone will be scared to become a sponsor now because they'll be demonised at the end of the contract term.

Also Tesco have sponsored pride for years, it's certainly not a swap! but I guess people wouldn't be so "outraged" if the press had printed Tesco drops race for life to sponsor help for heroes.
