Anti virus software

I am looking for a half decent anti virus software that won't cost the earth. I have cancelled my Norton as it was getting quite expensive.
Can anyone recommend an alternative.
I see that AVG download is free but there must be a catch.

xud, I've used AVG Free for years with no issues. However I would also recommend Malwarebytes as a backup, also free. Download it from Cnet.
