Norton icon on taskbar is ticked but will only respond to a Rt click but then if any item on it is clicked, (eg Open Norton) the menu disappears. Later a Norton 'Error Found' screen appears and works on problem 8504.104 for hours but solves nothing. Meantime I cannot contact Norton.

I assume you have a Norton account and a current subscription. What you need to do is to download the Norton Removal Tool off the web to delete all traces of Norton off your computer. In my case, I foolishly tried to install an additional malware program off the web which interfered with Norton and prevented me from opening the main interface. The removal of Norton via the tool and subsequent re-installation solved the problem

Thanks for the advice. It worked and all is well apart from the fact that there is no Norton icon on the taskbar and I can't find how to retrieve it.
Try right-clicking on the taskbar and selecting properties. Within that is the option to select which icons appear in the notification area; the format for this has changed slightly with different versions of Windows.

After I wrote you, an unknown icon appeared on the taskbar ....... my version of N. was out of date. A current one is now installed - with icon!
I'm glad you got it sorted. Remember that you can use the removal tool as many times as you like when you have a problem. It's far easier than head scratching - just delete and reinstall.

You should be able to pin a new Norton icon to the task bar notification area by right clicking the icon in program files. Exact instructions differ depending on your Windows version.
