Broadband problems

On 3rd November we had Broadband activated, and right from the start have had big problems - until last night (sunday) I havn't been able to connect at all, as it says no dial tone. Loads and loads of phone calls to Tesco later, BT eventually did a test on the line on Friday, and aparantly came back as saying there was no problem. When I tried to connect last night, it actually connected for the first time, however it disconnected after about 3-4 minutes. This happened again a little later, but then was unable to connect at all again. I rang Tesco who said that they'd report it for more tests. This morning I connected first go, and so far it hasn't disconnected me, although when I get in this evening I seriously doubt whether it'll connect at all. Does anyone know perhaps what the most likely problem is? I really need internet access for college work, and it's driving me mad!

Sorry it's long.

I don't know technically what the prob would be but I do know that we had exactly the same difficulty with AOL. BT said it was the supplier (AOL) and AOL said it was the line (BT) Eventually we got totally fed up and switched top BT Broadband on the basis that now it would all be one company's responsibility to deal with. Result is broadband and no probs!!
where exactly does it say "no dial tone"? Are you sure it's broadband you're getting?
If you use Internet Explorer I'd look at
Tools > Internet Options
then Connections

The three "radio buttons" (they look like bullet points) on the left - are any of those indicating that you should be trying to use a dial up connection? You shouldn't be.

I'd just like to say thanks for the replies - hadn't been able to connect at all since I posted the question until this afternoon, when a BT man came round and fixed the problem - old wiring or something!
