Bought a 2nd hand computer yesterday as i've just moved into a new flat and broke my computer in the move. Computer works fine but my asdl USB external modem doesn't seem to be working. One green light is on, and one is flashing. I get the message no dial tone when i try to connect to net. It's first time trying to connect in the new flat with the new telephone number, could this be the problem? Also, exactly how important is it to have the asdl filter plugged directly into the wall phone socket as opposed to an extension or splitter? The reason being that my cables can't reach otherwise unless i completely shift the computer. What would people advise to do first? I'm with tiscali.

Have you had broadband activated on that line? have you been notified that broadband has been activated?

I have contacted tiscali to activate it and i got a confirmation email saying i'd requested it but they never sent me a confirmation email saying they'd done it. They just stated that if there was a problem or delay they'd email me and it could take upto 10 days but that was about 2.5 weeks ago
It may not even be connected yet in that case. Phone them and find out.
best to have asdl into main socket and splitter after - my tiscali set-up took several weeks as there was no capability in the exchange and BT and Tiscali didn't communicate together well! Chase themI
