i currently access the internet via dial up through my laptop
i tried to plug my phone wire in at my mums house the other day but found that the connector was different
instead of the plastic clip being on the side ofthe fitting it was designed to be underneath
is there an adaptor that i can buy to account for this

Sounds like your mum has ISDN or broadband, and you were trying to connect to a digital socket. If she has broadband she should have a filter box where you can connect your modem, and if she has ISDN there should be a box on the wall which has a couple of analog sockets.
