Well, don't just stop Norton from running when booting up, actually remove it!

Use AVG instead.

Then goto start->run, and type 'msconfig' (no quotes when you type it).

Goto the startup tab, and if you see anything that you are sure you can untick because you don't need it, then untick it.
hi, I would agree in getting rid of Norton. However if you hold down control alt and delete on the keyboard after Windows has loaded. you will have a list of background programs and processes that are being currently used. Resource values are also given, you can see what exactly is hogging your cpu.
Got to agree with the other posters. I was a big fan of Nortons software from the early days of System Works 2 etc; Peter Nortons excellent work went pear shaped when Symantec took over!!. The Norton tools are themselves very resource hungry and impact greatly on performance.Keep your hard drive optimized by regular defrag...don't run unnecessary apps at startup that you don't really need. Try AVG or Avast for your antivirus needs..both are very good and provide efficient regularly updated databases etc;Try the free download of System Mechanic and see how that performs .It can sort out defragged memory..optimize your startup and safely monitor your registry.Don't play around with registry editing unless you know your way around.Sys Mechanic is a decent tool for anyone trying to keep their machine optimized and it backs up your system so you can undo any unwanted changes..Hope this helps.....
