strange phone calls

when we answer a call from telephone number 08007831574 there is nobody on the end of the phone. If we call it back we get the message "the message has been sent as voice mail to " and no number is given. Has anyone else experienced this or does anyone know what this is all about. Thanks.

It seems to be a market research company - cold callers.

There is nobody on the end of the phone because computers are dialing literally thousands of phone numbers in the hope that one will be answered when a call handler is free.

They give a phone number for you to call back for one reason only - to get round the 'block anonymous callers' and 'anonymous caller rejection' many people have.

Take comfort in the fact that every time you dial that number it costs the company money.

UPDATE. This number belongs to tiscali broadband. I am on tps. Thanks for your help Ethel.

DO NOT join the telephone preference service it is a load of rubbish. When you get no answer on the end of the phone press # repeatidly. Because these commercial auto dialers are dealing with so many calls at once pressing the buttons helps to crash the computer systems. With any look you won't get any calls from them for a while.

I have been getting silent calls from 0800 7831574 before and after I recently moved house - was with Tiscali at both addresses/telephone numbers...
