associated folders

on occasions i cannot open a attachment in my mail ,i get the banner,this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action,create an association folder options control panel
any help i would appreciate or explanation of this.

Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, and in the left pane select File Types. Scroll down for the file type you want and choose an appropiate program to Open With.
