AOL Broadband problems
4 Answers
Hi there. I was using a SpeedTouch 510v4 router to connect to AOL Broadband, but this morning it stopped displaying the connected icon. I have also tried using the original USB DSL modem you sent us which did not display the 'link' light either. I have tried using another cable to plug into the phoneline, and also another computer to try and connect, none of these work. This suggests a problem with the phone line, but it works fine on dial up or making a normal phone call, so where can the problem be and how do we fix it? I have tried this problem with AOL support line, but i got the usual text book answer 'please phone this number for more help', so before i do that i wondered if anyone else can help? Thanks

Our router is connected to the pc by a network cable. We had a lot of trouble getting the router to work at first but after a phone call to Belkin technical support it worked fine. I think it is something to do with the AOL software and loads of configurations that need to be changed. Try phoning the router manufacturer because it is likely that it is the router's settings playing up rather than the actual Broadband connection.
Sorry, i'm not sure if you understand the problem 100%. After i got the adsl router i configured it and after a bit of tweaking i got it to work fine, it's always on so you don't even need the aol software to connect (unless you want to to use their browser/email thing). Before this i was using the usb modem but found it wasnt all that reliable, but it worked a small bit at least. Now both have just stopped being able to find a connection with the servers, on the same phoneline. I also used my brother's laptop which is configued to (and did perfectly for quite a long time) use the usb modem as well, and it still didn't light up the 'link' light.
Basically what i'm saying is that it worked fine, then stopped, without any changing of settings. Then we tried another modem which doesn't even have any settings to change, and that couldn't connect, then we even tried that modem with another terminal to rule out the slight posibilty of it being the computer (which is unlikely since the router doesn't need any computer input to connect once it's been set up). Since we tried two cables as well, all that leaves me with is a problem with the phoneline, or a general problem with AOL.
I will be phoning them tomorrow (although i dont have very high hopes for success), but i just wondered if anyone else had come across the same problem and how they fixed it.
First go round your house and remove all telephone devices. If someone has plugged in a phone/fax/skybox without a filter then thats your problem. It maybe that a filter has failed so unplugging everything checks for this.
Next unplug your ADSL connection from your router and wait 30 minutes. This allows the exchange card to reset, plug back in and see if it works.
