on the network and sharing center, you know where it has the 3 icons (my pc---the connection name----then the internet symbal) it recognises the connection to my modem but then fails to gain internet acces

ive just noticed that on the task bar on the bottom right it says ACCESS LOCAL ONLY but on my laptop it says ACCESS LOCAL AND INTERENT. how do i change this
Silly question - is your pc wireless enabled?

How old is it? XP or Vista?
Question Author
its not wireles, i have a network adapter. the pc is nearly 5 years old but is unning vista
Has this adapter ever connected your pc to the internet?

Is it set up correctly?

Have you turned everything off and back on again in the proper order:

Modem
Router (if separate)
Pcs and laptops

That can very often help connection problems
you are either using the wrong type of security for your wireless network, have typed the network security key in wrong, or are trying to connect to a secured network without any security setup on your PC

Basically it's a security problem... you can connect to the wireless router but without the security set up they won't talk to each other.

disconnect and reconnect and it should prompt you for a security key or pass phrass... which may be on a sticker on your router (if your lucky) type that in and all should be good.

Why are you connecting a desktop PC by wireless anyhow.... wireless is a bit ropey at the best of times and your not going to be walking about the house with a desktop so use wired if at all possible.

OK more answers appeared since I started typing...

errrr, how do you get a very weak signal with a wired connection?

Anyhow... probably a DHCP issue.... who is your ISP? as would probably solve it setting your IP details manually
Sorry to butt in, but Chuck- would you mind popping over here if you get chance? Ta xxhttp://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/Technology/Comp uters/Question640377.html

can i transfer my conection details of my laptop to my pc anyhow. like a copy and paste?
can we clear up how are you connecting your PC to the router... is it wireless or by a cable?

You've said both so far!
Question Author
wireless
OK see my first answer then...

You need your security key for your network, when you try to connect it should ask for this.

If your lucky the key maybe on a sticker on the back/bottom of the router.

If not what make is the router?
Question Author
its a netgear and i dont have the security key
on your laptop that is connected ok click on the link below

http://192.168.1.1

This should take you to the login page for your router, login with the following

username: admin
Password: password

once logged in look on the left hand side for the link to wireless setting and click on it

towards the bottom of this page you will see your network key, make a not of this.

Now go to the PC and open your wireless network list, disconnect from the wireless network and then reconnect, when it asks for the key put in the one you have made a note of and click connect.

**ahem, thanks Chuck for clearing up the mess i left **xxx

its not letting me connect to that page
you did use your laptop didn't you?

if it was on the laptop then still on the laptop click start > run and type in cmd and hit enter

then in the black window that comes up type ipconfig and hit enter. Make a note of the number next to default gateway.

Then open a web browser and just type that number into the address bar and hit enter.
