MSN Emotions

Recently I've been on my MSN and the standard and also my custom emotions don't show up - for example, the smiley face :) doesn't show up as a smiley, just as the colon and bracket. To others I think it shows up as the emotion, but it doesn't for me :(

What's going on? And how do I resolve it? I've tried getting rid of my MSN Messenger and then redownloading and reinstalling but it did nothing, so it's an account error. But what do I do?

sign in to messenger, make it full screen and then click tools > options. select the messages tab and make sure there is a tick in "show smileys"
