Annoying Work Colleague

I work with a lad who i would describe as the most annoying cretin i've ever met & now i find myself getting annoyed at the slightest thing he does (the way he walks, sits, eats, etc).

I don't know what to do to stop it annoying me so much.

He always tries to better a story someone else might be telling. If you've been to Tenerife, then he's been to Elevenerife.

Loads of other people at work think he's a prat but i seem to be the only one who can't ignore it.

What can i do to stop if affecting me?

Does he sit near you? Can you put up a screen (mental if not actual)? the trouble is, when something starts getting to you, you notice it all the time.

The office isn't big enough to avoid him. I was considering pointing me desk to face the wall which would be more entertaining than listening to him.

I know there's always somebody at work who'll annoy me, but this bloke takes the biscuit.

1.get a 1/2 decent mp3 player, and a good pair of headphones,that might go towards distracting you.
2. reverse psychology, i´ll let you think about this one

It's an office which serves customers so we're not allowed music at all. I could just sing songs in my head which might have the same effect.

I have a colleague who drives me completely up the wall. She talks non stop from 9 till 5 about nothing! (cakes, what she made for dinner last night/is making tonight, shopping, clothes, celebrity gossip - and she's in her 50s but thinks Posh Spice is the best thing in the whole world). I've worked with her for about 12 years and about 2 years ago I figured a way to deal with her. When she starts, I just look at her and in my head I visualise a cartoon version of her. I have an Elmer Fudd style gun and when I pull the trigger I see an explosion of feathers and hear a chicken noise in my head. Sounds bizarre, but it makes me smile and she doesn't annoy me quite so much for a while ;)

In my case I transferred ... there were other circumstances though. Best thing I did!

how old is he, perhaps he's really shy but blusters a lot, to make himself look more important than he is. Shy people are often the loudest and can be the most annoying. Try sitting down with him, and you may find some common ground to work on.

I have a similar thing with one of my housemates, EVERYTHING about her irritates me: she coughs and sneezes all over the place without putting her hand over her mouth. She is a "heel walker" so evertime she walks past, it goes "Boom, thud, boom, thud..." she's a raving christian, she walks around talking loudly on her mobile as if we all need to hear it, she rips bits out of the bread with her picky-bum fingers - and what's most infuriating of all is that she is one of those "wouldn't say boo to a goose" harmless types - so I can't dig at her without looking like a total wonker!
