I have just come to the end of my mobile broadband contract with Orange and expected them to stop asking for money or inform me that the contract was ending. My mother has done the same but with Vodaphone, she rang them and asked what happens now. She was told that she has to give thirty days notice for the end of the contract, so I rang Orange and was told the same.

If it was a 24 month contract are they permitted to just roll it over without informing us? I was under the impression that such roll overs were not legal. Am I wrong?

I believe a 24 month contract means that you are locked in with them for the 24 months (unless you pay a penalty). Then the contract goes over to a rolling contract month by month. It does not mean that at the end of the 24 months they cut you off.
What does it say in your agreement....?
From the Orange T's&C's
"2.1 For each Device you own, your Contract starts on the date of Registration and will continue for the Minimum Term and thereafter You have limited rights to terminate your Contract during the Minimum Term as described in Section 4."

"2.2 After the Minimum Term ends, we will continue to supply you with Services as normal until your Contract is terminated in any of the ways described in Section 4."

"4.1 You may terminate your Contract to expire at any time after the Minimum Term by giving us at least one month's notice. You are free to restore your Contract throughout this notice period, should you change your mind."
