Does anyone know of any free or trial version software for movie editing that works!!

It depends on what you intend, but windows movie maker is free and it's latest versions are really quite good.
I think also that Camtasia might be able to help you - has a free trail version.
If you are using a Flip camera their inbuilt software is quite sufficient.
