Over the last month I have developed acid reflux and it is getting so bad now that I can't even sleep lieing down! I burp acid all the time and have the foulest breath that my 7yr old told me to brush my teeth!!! Oh and I don't know if it is connected but a crownfell out yesterday?

If I do Lie down I wake with Acid coming out my mouth and nose and it is the vilest taste so have now taken to sleeping sitting up in bed. But that is so uncomfortable that I now have a dodgy back lol

The arm chair is now my prefered mode of sleep :(

I have taken antacid tablets and gavisdon liquid but they don't seem to do a great deal.

Anyway after all this waffle... Any ideas on what to try next?

Thank you

see a doctor? Mine gave me lansoprazole pills to take daily and they seem to have worked. (Too late to save my teeth, which have been eaten away from behind.)
Have you been to the drs? There are lots of different meds they can try that you can't get over the counter. I think there's also surgery for severe cases.

Lanzoprazol or Omeprazol will do the trick, just see your GP, easily solved.

Thank you for your replies. I shall have to o o the Dr when the kids are back at school I think.
Yes - I can vouch for Lanzaprazole tablets. Just one a day has worked wonders for me over the past 2 years and my symptoms were almost as bad as yours, they have completely changed my life. Do see your GP as soon as you can and get some well needed relief!
I also agree that lanzoprazole pills are great, i had to take them because i was taking other medicines which irritated the stomach. But they stopped the acid reflux after stopping the other medication.
First things first. Find out what's causing it. Next, get something with "prazole" in the title then get a good sleep.
I've found not eating nuts and/or oat related products before bed helps a lot but I'd check with a health profesional anyway.
In addition to Lanzoprazole tablets, I now sleep with 3 pillows and get much better quality sleep.
Ahem, professional. :(
Sounds like GERD (Google it)

If you are overweight...lose some of it.

Sleep with 2 or 3 pillows as suggested by ann 86

Take Lanzoprazole.

Give it another 2 weeks and if it is no better, see your GP.
can i ask how long some take the Lanzoprazole for, as i have had this problems for years, and every day cough, have blocked nose, and congested. Tried before to sleep with more than one pillow, but find it awkward and hurts my neck. Maybe will give it another go. Seeing gastro consultant in october, for another check. Do you just take the drug for ever? i have been given all sorts of stuff and nothing works. Gaviscon is vile, and makes me feel worse, so threw it out. One thing on the page about GERD is that avoid peppermint, which seems odd, considering that is whats in gaviscon.
one other thing, if you had acid reflux for many years, can this be the cause of tooth decay, or one of the causes.
em10, As far as im aware you can take Omeprazole or Lanzoprezol indefinately.

Rather than propping your head up on pillows, try raising the head of the bed a couple of inches.

See your GP also.
em10 RATTER is correct.....you will be on them for the rest of your life.

Tooth decay?I have seen no literature to support that claim, but it MAY be possible...........MAY!
em, yes, my dentist says it's been the main cause of my tooth decay (of which I have unfortunately had lots, because I didn't know about it). I dont' know if it's connected with the loss of cassa's cfrown, though - that's probably just coincidence.
Em10. If you can't stand Gaviscon, try Tesco's Heartburn and Indigestion Liquid. It's a very similar formula to Gaviscon but Aniseed flavoured and a lot cheaper.
thank you all, i will look into that, perhaps try more pillows, but in the past i usually get a crick neck, and hated gaviscon, so maybe something else, aniseed always reminds me of ouzo, and wondered about the Lanzoprazole because i have had this in the past, perhaps i didn't take the stuff long enough. I thought a month perhaps six weeks, would be ample time to see if it works, and it didn't see to be doing anything. Seeing the gastro man so will see what he says.
I had this after chemo and it was awful. I am now on Lanzoparole which I take every other day. I can still get it at night though - diet is the thing. I don't have wheat or any gluten, no nuts, white wine is a killer and if I put on weight it is worse.
The doctor told me to put books under the end of the bed to lift it, but OH can't sleep like that so I have two pillows instead!
