Could someone clarify something for me please.

If I have an HD TV I need to be using something like an HD Freeview box and HD cable to actually be viewing HD don't I?

I won't just be getting HD through the normal digital aerial?

If your TV has a freeview HD receiver built in then you can get HD through your aerial, otherwise, yes you are correct in what you say.

Oh, maybe I was slightly mistaken then. We do normally use the built in freeview in TV but I was under the impressiont his wouldn't supply HD.

How do I know we are getting HD (I'm not sure I've ever been able to tell the difference).

As I said, it needs to be a freeview "HD" tuner for you to receive HD via freeview, a normal freeview tuner will not give you HD.

Quite simply, if you can see the HD channels in your program guide you can get HD, if not then you've not got a freeview HD tuner and can't receive HD via freeview.

Ah ok. That makes sense. I'm not getting any HD channels in my listing so I'm not getting HD currently.

You need to look for the logo on the set, or on the box it came in.

If this logo is present

your TV set has an HD tuner built into it and you don't require any additional equipment.

If only this logo is shown

then your set is simply 'HD ready'. That means that it can display an HD signal from an external soure, such as a Blu-Ray disk player, a Sky HD box or a Freeview HD set-top box, but it doesn't have its own HD tuner built into it.

ejayjay - no you are not.

I used to have Sky HD and whilst initially it was fairly impressive (particularly BBC HD) they soon turned up the compression to aid broadcasting.

I now watch only in SD and have to say I don't miss HD or Sky one little bit.

HD is far more impressive in Blu Ray or downloaded format as the compression is far less.

No you're not alone. A while back my brother was trying to show me the effects of HD by switching between HD TV and Non HD on a Rugby match. He was almost getting angry with me that I was struggling to tell the difference.
