Sky dish - Freesat receiver?
6 Answers
I have just cancelled my sky subscription and have heard of people buying a 'freesat'? receiver which they then use with their sky dish and get 200ish channells - what is this receiver that i need to buy? will i get lots of channells? Are they some of the Sky channells? We already have a Hitachi HD box thing that records 2 channels at the same time, pauses live tv etc is this the same thing? would that get more channels attached to the sky dish rather than the aerial? Sorry so many questions but i have no knowledge about such things! And thank you very much for your help.

(other suppliers are availble)
Note there are freesat receivers and freesat receivers/recorders, the former only only allows you to view channels, the later are more expensive but allow you to record onto a hard drive inside the receiver.

There are two types of Freesat.
There is the Freesat from Sky (where you use a sky dish and a Sky box but dont pay Sky anythying). As you already have sky dish and Sky box you already have this.

Then there is the Freesat provided by BBC/ITV that uses a Sky dish, but different Freesat receiver. You need to buy the Freesat receiver and use it in place of your Sky receiver.

Note on the Freesat for Sky page, in the FAQ, it says
Q. I already have Sky digital satellite equipment - what else do I need?
A. All you need to gain access to the free channels available on the digital satellite platform is a Freesat from Sky viewing card, which costs just £25. If you’d like to access the interactive services available, you’ll also need a working phone line. To purchase a viewing card please phone Sky on 08448 244 400.

Hi VHG, I looked at the web site for Freesat but note that they don't have the YESTERDAY channel which I like (Good ol' Catherine Cookson!) Any idea how I can get this channel? This is going to sound very confusing! I do have YESTERDAY on my upstairs tele on Freeview but not on my lounge TV that also has Freeview. ?!?!?
