Is it another scam?

We received through the post yesterday a letter from the bank Santander about savings. It gave a number to reply to which you would hand over all your personal details.

The problem is we don't have an account with Santander. Was this a phishing exercise hoping that some recipients would have a savings account with Santander and contact them.

We know a similar exercise was done with another bank some time ago.

Similar scams are attempted with all sorts of bank all the time. Usually by e-mail these days.

Definitely a scam, so delete it and forget it. The banks do not ask for any details via email.

Are you sure that you didn't, at one time, have an account with Abbey National (which later became just 'Abbey')? If so, you'll probably still be on Santander's mailing list. Alternatively it could just be a standard piece of marketing, based upon information shared by another company (such as the people who phone you up and ask if you'd help them with a 'survey')

Scams by post are fairly rare (largely because of the cost of mass mailings). If the envelope bore a stamp you should probably be suspicious. If it was franked then it's probably OK. If it was sent by one of the bulk posting services (such as TNT Mail) it's probably also OK.

As Chuck suggests, simply googling the phone number might help.

Santander also took over part of Bradford and Bingley, and also Alliance and Leicester, so if you had accounts with either of them the same applies as with Abbey.

It was personally addressed to us.

Never had an account with this organisation.

Was hoping that others have had the same letter.

SCAM!..SCAM!..without a shadow of a doubt......I've had the same thing from, or rather NOT from, half a dozen banks ..including my own.....if they asked you to log on or give account numbers it is NOT FROM A BANK.....they just would not do that. Just scumbags trying to part you from your hard earned savings.

Delete it and forget it...

Rov1100 received the letter by post, not by email. I frequently get letters from banks, credit card companies, etc, who want me to sign up for their services. They'll have got my name and address from the standard mailing lists which various organisations compile and sell. Their letters might be unwanted but they're definitely not fraudulent!

E mail or snail mail they were asking for ALL his personal details...and he wasn't even a customer........I repeat that no bank would ask for personal details in an unsecured way.....Scams come in all flavours.....

You are describing what I call "BUMF" mail............we all get this stuff almost on a daily basis.

It belongs in the waste basket..real or otherwise.
