VHS to laptop?

Is it possible to connect an old VHS player directly to my laptop? I have some old video tapes i would like to copy onto dvd but don't have a dvd recorder. How would i go about it?

You can't connect it directly - you would need a capture device, such as this:

been told you then need a dvd recorder....but am sure there is another way
I have all the right equipment, ie dvd recorder and an unconnected VHS machine, but with Sky and Spanish digiboxes also plugged in, I have no idea where and what to plug it into without messing up the whole shebang.
