Jumping when typing on laptop

I have been given a laptop by my daughter. When I am typing the cursor suddenly moves and starts typing in another part of my document. I would like to know if there is anything I can do to rectify this or must I take it to someone to be assessed? Is it likely to be expensive? Thank you

glad i am not the only one this happens to, wait for answer....
You are hitting the touch pad with your palms while typing.

Either be more careful, or disable the touchpad and use a mouse.

(if you install the full, correct drivers for the touchpad most have palm detection that's meant to stop it, but I've had limited luck with how well it works)
OH.... disabling tap to click in the touch pad properties can help too.
Sorry - the title made me laugh, I thought it was YOU jumping... :-)
use a mouse, and remember this from before, not only that for no reason can explain the ssss is sticking, so if you ee words that have it missing don't blame me.
I have the same problem, and never even go near the touch pad.
....and I use a mouse.
Smart1, how can you type without going near the touchpad?
Every time this question is asked people will say "but I never touch the touch pad"..... Yet strangely the question never arises about desktops.

It happens to me occasionally, but I know it's me causing it by catching the touchpad.
because my desk is high, and I am short - ergo when I type my wrists are high up- the only part at front of my laptop that I touch are the front R & L corners.
Apart from anything else, my cursor jumps when I play games as well - and I only use my mouse for that.

of course - laptop touchpad isn't the keyboard
OK, something else is wrong in your case.

It may still be worth disabling the touchpad, but I have no idea how to do this.
"but I have no idea how to do this."

As with most computer questions the answer to that depends entirely on the make and model of computer and/or the version of windows. (info that people rarely give yet still expect concise answers)
I said at the front of my laptop Hopkirk - the keypad is 4" away from the front. L O L
your typing style maybe be fine and you are not touching the touch pad, but your palms still cause the touch pad to move the cursor. try it you should be able to move the cursor with out touching just hovering. as for mice. clean it if its a ball, and clean you mouse pad or desk if its a laser. (red light)
as chuck said it happens to everyone, only diffrence seems to be denial
Thank you fever, - but as I have stated more than once no part of my anatomy (including arms, hands) ever come into contact with the touchpad. Hard for everyone to believe I know, but nevertheless it's the truth.
i just said it doesnt have to come in contact?
if you sit back and dont do anything does the cursor move on its own? or is it just when typing?
Yes it does.
