iTunes / App account problem

My friend has a problem on their iPhone 4S. When accessing iTunes it comes up with their full email address and can be accessed using the password. On opening Apps it comes up with just their name (first part of their email address) and the password is not being accepted. What have they done and how can it be altered as they cannot access and buy Apps. Thank u.
