My free antivirus runs out in three days so need a new one
36 Answers
I had mcafee for a month and when that ran out i used avg which will run out in three days leaving me open to attack.
I asked a friend which one was better to buy and they replied that you can get free protection on the internet, is this true if so which ones?
Are the free ones better then the above mentioned ones or is it better to pay for a subscription? Are some better then others as i would like full protection.
I have a Sony Vaio if that helps.

Download the free version and pay attention during the install as it will try and make you start a trial of the paid for version so you have to decline the offer to get the free version.

My son works in IT security and he recommended Kaspersky. There is a new 2012 version out and it's really easy to install. You can buy it on Amazon for about £16. That will cover you for three computers,so if you have a desktop and PC it can be used for both. I'm not sure but you could probably share the unused portion with someone else, you would just need to use the code provided. Avg free is quite good too and I used that for years.
Not sure what you're doing.
I click the big green "download now" button, it goes to another page and the download starts automatically after a few seconds, then when it's finished run the file you've just downloaded and it installs.
When you first run it you will get a prompt asking if you want to start a trial of the paid for version, simply select decline and you'll have the free version.
At no point did it ask me to pay for anything.

Thank you all, i have downloaded both malwarebytes, mse and uninstalled avg. The sad thing is before i did it avg flashed a red 4 bar warning of a threat and secured this into the virus vault which it later said was malware so it did help me before i pulled it's plug. I hope mse is as capable as avg.
Can anyone give me a rough idea of how the free version of avg, mse and kapersky all rate with 10 being the best and 0 being the worst?

It should have an icon down by the clock that looks like the green one with a tick here....

(it may be a different colour, green means all good, if it's orange or red then something need attention)
