Is there much point in getting a new tv with 1080p as opposed to 1 with 720p. Main use would be for watching sport, films(on dvd) and tv(virgin media + box via HD)

from just looking at a few websites it depends on the size of the tv screen

Thanks, part of the issue is the budget of £300 so i was thinking maybe go for a set with 720p but not sure.
I honestly can't answer the question but the following may help:-

Ron.
are you going to be using a blueray player?....if so go for the full 1080
Final picture quality depends on so many factors - my advice is to stick with a decent brand (Panasonic, Samsung etc) and avoid supermarket own-brands and "Argos-only" sets, which are made down to a price.
Good question DC, I'll be taking an interest on all the answers as I'm looking for a new TV with the same budget.

Mickrog, no we only have a dvd player but i do have a hd dvd player for the xbox if that makes a difference.
Richer Sounds is a great place to buy a TV (one of Which? Best Retailers) and as you can see (depending on size of screen) you can get a decent 1080p set within your budget.

not much price difference if any on a 720 or 1080p
go for 1080p you never know what you well want later and a tv should last min: 6 years +
Question Author
Yes ive been looking at richer sounds,
This is a full HD 1080 40" and a great buy, I've had 2 and I'm more than happy, and it's well within your budget.

I read somewhere that you shouldn't go less than 1080, but I can't remember where.

I think it is in case you want to watch in HD in the future.
Question Author
ut my original question wasn't where to buy 1 from but more would it be worth buying a 1080p if the main use would be films(on dvd and tv) and sport (via v+ box using hdmi cable).

Thanks
Yes it would, imo!
