Hope someone can help. I've an old PC (it's got an a: drive on it!). Although there is nothing in the cd drive, the light is constantly on, but it won't open. I've tried ejecting it from 'my computer', but I get an error 'illegal function' or 'illegal action'. I don't want to spend a small fortune getting it repaired if it's a simple fix. Anyone any ideas? Thanks in advance.
There is a small hole at the front that I use a unbent paper clip to push into the hole and that opens the drive enough to get hold of and pull it open
Even if you get it open it sounds like it's developed a problem. Replacing it isn't hard. Turn the PC off. Open the case by removing the holding screws. Note the cables going into the back of the duff drive (because you'll need to plug them into the same sockets in the same orientation when you have the new one). Unplug the cables. Remove the screws holding the drive to the chassis. Remove the old drive, put in new one. Screw in the holding screws. Plug the cables in. Close case by replacing the screws. Turn on and use new drive. The PC should find and sort out what it needs to run the new drive without you doing anything more.
