Currnetly I have a PC but in the coming months I intend buying a laptop. The PC is in the living room which is where the phone line is but I want to move it to the spare bedrrom (I live in a bungalow). Is it easy to take a phone line through to the next room (going round the walls not through them) and connect it? I know it's quite cheap to buy the bits but wonder if I would be able to do it myself. I assume I would have to have a hub rather than the modem I have at present. Many thanks.

The easiest way would be to go wireless. You would get more flexibility with the new laptop this way as well as you could use it in any room.

I assume you are on broadband via your phone line (not cable) and you have a simple wired modem to your current PC. If so, you’ll need a wireless modem / router (what you have called a hub) instead. Any new laptop you get will have wireless functionality built in so no problem there. The old PC probably doesn’t though, so you’ll need a wireless adaptor for this.

Something along the lines of the 2 products below should get you up and running for less than £50. I’m not recommending them specifically as I haven’t used these specific products, just pointing you in the right direction.

Firstly to answer your question ..yes it is easy to run the cables round the walls if you like....

I have a wireless modem/router(free from Orange) in my spare bedroom which is on the end of along phone adapter cable from my main phone socket wihich is two rooms away in my pantry ....My PC which doesn't have a Wifi adapter is in the spare room too plugged into the modem via an ethernet cable...my laptop is then free to move around the house ising WiFi......

You'll need a filterto keep the phone and modem seperated but they are just plug in things ....on the scale of computer DIY things to do....I'd say a difficulty rating of 2/10 ..even less........
