Samsung 1080i screen goes off very quickly

I've just got a Samsung 1080i as a basic phone. I notice that the "idle" screen will not stay on for more than a second. The menu screen stays up a bit longer but goes off after 5 seconds.

I changed power saving mode on and off and it didnt make any difference.

Any clues?
