Just a few more thoughts...
1. There is a comment somewhere on the vast HP website to the effect that the best way to install software (drivers, etc) is from the website rather than from the CD that was supplied with the printer. This is because the website is kept up to date whereas the disc was only current at the time the printer was purchased. Makes sense, doesn't it?
2. The website therefore seems the best place to start, especially if there is some confusion over which of your discs does what.
3. If you go to the Technical Support page on the website,
http://h10025.www1.hp...ad&dlc=en&product=top and enter your product details and then click on "Find and Fix Common Printer Problems Using HP Diagnostic Tools ›" Then go to the third item down, "HP Scan Diagnostic Utility" and click on "Learn More". This will tell you the issues that this little program addresses. You'll see that it mentions some of the problems that you have described. Then go back and click on "Download Utility" and again, follow your nose through the procedure.
4. If this doesn't work, we are probably left with the Uninstall / Reinstall option mentioned earlier in our discussions. As I have aleady mentioned. this is not as daunting as it may appear and can all be done through the website.
(Weather-wise, it appears that we're in for a pretty horrible weekend, Andy Murray is out of Queen's so what else is there to do but sort your printer out? No need to answer that! Please let me know how you get on. Nothing would give me greater pleasure than to know that you'd got everything sorted! (Well, there are some things that would give me greater pleasure but we'll not go into them here!))
I suggest that you start with the diagnostic thing as mentioned in para 3 above.
