I tried to scan a letter from my printer to my PC but nothing is happening. I can print FROM my PC & I can print from my printer. It used to be so easy - what's happened?

The next screen should show your printer on the list. Maybe OG can answer this, but I'm not sure exactly what other information this gives you.
As Alice says, let us know the make and model of your printer / scanner. There will probably be someone on here who has the same model - and the instruction manual - and they will then be able to guide you through the steps to get everything working again.

I'll try to give a more complete answer tomorrow but just for starters have you got "HP Solution Center" on nyour computer?
(Go to Start¦ Programs You should then see HP with a small arrow at the side of it. Click on this arrow to open a drop down menu.
If this menu contains "HP Solution Center", click on this and then when it loads up click on "Scan Document" or "Scan Photo".
Allow time for it to scan and save. Note where it is saved!

Hi Michael, I don't appear to have HP Solution centre. On my search, I found in the Control panel 'scanner and camera' After clicking on this, HP PSC1400 appeared. It went on to state 'Your Imaging device successfully completed the diagnostic test' but still not scanning but it must be IN THERE SOMEWHERE for it to say that surely??!! I turned off the PC & Printer (Pulled plugs out as well) Re started it all but nothing!

Once installed, make sure your printer/scanner is connected to the computer and start Irfanview up. Click the FILE tab on top and select the "select scan/TWAIN source", this should bring up a small window with your printer's name on it. Click that and load the scanner. Go back to the Irfanview view prog and back to the FILE tab. This time select the "acquire batch scanning option" and configure the next screen to "single scan etc. When you ok that the scanner should start up (it may first have to "warm up") and will give you heaps of options on how to edit the image, if you want to.
The Irfanview prog is the best free image program available and I use it for almost all my photo stuff. For more elaborate editing use photoshop or similar.

If you scroll down until you reach Windows Vista (about a third of the way down the page) you'll see some possible solutions to your problem.
It would probably be a good idea to read the various solution options before you dive in.
Perhaps the "Workaround" might be a good place to start.

As you say, the good news is that the computer recognises that the printer is there and is "successfully completed thed diagnostic test (!)" If you still have the original installation disc, I would suggest that uninstalling and reinstalling might still be a good option. There should be a "Compatiblity" option to enable it to run with Vista even if it was originally intended for (say) WinXP.

What version of windows did you have before Vista?
The HP disk for my HP 4100 series all-in-one says Windows 2000, XP and Vista. I would have thought that yours may be similar.
If you just select your printer and delete it I don't think this will have the desired effect. It need properly uninstalling.
I have just (for the hell of it) put my CD in my drive and it does have an "Uninstall" option showing. I seem to recall using that when I had to return my printer because of a fault on it a couple of years ago. (Incidentally, I am currently using Vista and have done all the time I've had this printer)
I also have an Uninstall option if I go to Start ¦ Programs ¦ HP ¦ Deskjet All in one F4100 ¦
If you don't have "HP" showing on your list of programs then I suggest that you check again to see if your computer can read your CD. If it can, you should be able to do the Uninstall (from memory it takes about 10 minutes - you'd be surprised how much stuff there is on an HP disk!) and then the reinstall - which also takes a bit longer than you might expect.
When you have done that, you should have the HP Solution Center (I just love American spelling! Not!) installed and that will make your scanning a bit easier. Also of course it should put you back to where you want to be in terms of being able to scan by pressing the button on the printer.
I've uninstalled / reinstalled my AIO several times and although it may seem daunting itinvariably turns out OK in the end!

(Win ME = Millennium Edition. It was the successor to Win 98. It went out of fashion about 5 years ago, I think)
I've been doing some more playing about on the HP website and come up with this:-
Go to http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/hpsupport/index.pl and click on the map (presumably the Europe bit and then the UK!)
Then click on the purple / blue box headed Product Support & Troubleshooting and enter your product name (Deskjet 1400 or whatever) in the box. This will come up with a choice of 3 models (1402, 1410 and 1417) so select the one that is yours.
At the next screen click on Getting Started, then Install Software and Drivers and the same again in the next window (!)
Then at the next window, choose Microsoft Windows (obviously!) and then from the list of choices, select "Windows - How to get HP Solution Center"
Click on the "+" sign to expand Windows Vista and then select the "Option two - Download and install ... from the website"
Follow your nose through the procedure and you should find that you'll eventually have "HP solution center" installed.
Then have a couple of paracetamol and a hot water bottle on your stiff neck and you should be in business!
Also, if you explore the website (makes you wonder who spends their days writing these websites, doesn't it?) you'll see other options for scanning from Windows Gallery and Paint - both of which work but maybe aren't quite as convenient as "Solution Center".

Before you embark on any of the suggestions in my earlier reply, can I just suggest that you put you old CD in the drive and see if it runs. if you get a screen with various possible options it is possible that it is compatible with Vista - even though it doesn't say so on the disc. (When the disc was made, ithad never heard of Vista had it?)
