Speakers don't work...
8 Answers
Hi ... i have a problem....
I have had to say to old computer and have inherited a new one. It has been completely wiped clean and reformatted.. before i had it everything worked perfectly.. but for some reason, as it entered my house it has decided not to recognize any audio device and I can not get the speakers to work. They are plugged in correctly ( stupid as that may seem, but I can imagine the first answer to be... "are they plugged in the right port?").. They have power, they crackle as you touch the plug in point, but you go to the "sounds and audio" options to tell it to work and it just tells me there is NO audio devices connected !...... What the ...... Has anybody any ideas ?

Sometimes an O/S does not have the correct driver for audio on a motherboard, and you need to re-install a driver - online.
If subsequent help and all else fails got one of these cheap things.

Ah ha.... Hadn't thought of the driver at all ....
Chuckfickens suggested there could be more drivers not installed..... What could they be ?
And thanks wildwood.... Gonna have a go at doing it online...
Wish me luck....
I do have another problem regarding an e-mail program but I'll post that separately....
Many thanks......

IF it's vista or windows 7 try running a windows update a couple of times, chances are it will pick up the drivers for most things OK...
if it's XP (or if it doesn't auto install the drivers with an update) then you probably need.
Graphics driver
Chipset driver
Network driver
Touchpad driver
hotkey drivers (if it's a laptop only)
wireless network driver
card reader driver (if it has one)
Modem driver (if it has one... though you'll probably never need to use it.)
Some if the above may be working with the default windows drivers (i.e. graphics and touchpad) but you'll get better performance or features with the proper drivers.

WoW... Thanks Chuckfickens..... Thats certainly given me something to scratch my head about.. but at the moment everything is working fine apart from sound. I have just posted a new question about which Audio Driver to install.. Turns out there is a whole plethora of options ... I have windowsXP but do not know what motherboard it is.... Any suggestions about that ?
