What do i have to check to overcome my PC being so slow recently?? The initial startup is slow going from one site to another is slow, even clicking on something on the same site is slow. What used to be a 2-3 second time lag is now nearer 20 seconds,it's driving me up the wall. Thanks in anticipation!!!

ur right Viv, tools/add ons/ extensions, for disable & enable
Question Author
Hi Ron getting back to my last post I can't see how to disable or retrieve the add-ons.
I now realise that I wasn't all that explicit. So let's try again.:-

Click open 'Tools' in Firefox then select 'Add-ons from the drop down menu; then. on the page which is opened. click 'Extensions'. You can then disable any items you wish from the next page which appears, without fear of loosing them because clicking the 'disable' boxes will change them to 'enable' so that you can put them back.

Thanks Ron,that was well explained even for an "old git" like me.Problem is there were only a few add-ons there so little scope to speed -up.Thanks,this post is getting as long as an encyclopaedia.
If you have accurately reported your connection speed that Download speed is very low. Are you on the phone line or cable?

These links above are the speed testers I use.

Hi there HK,your 3rd suggestion was the tester I used. The other two showed figures BELOW the ones in my previous post.Could you give me some idea what would be an average figure to expect? What can I check to gain some improvement before getting in touch with my ISP? Thanks!!
Bearing in mind that I am Not a real expert on these matters, I too am of the opinion that, with a 'Ping' of 19, your download speed is very slow.(don't worry too much up about the upload speed at this stage) I average a 'Ping' of 25 and downloads in excess of 14.(BT Broadband) (lower the 'Ping' the better)

To answer your query about average speed it depends on so many factors. There certainly does appear to be something amiss and raises questions as regards whether it is a fault on your Computer or connection problems with your Broadband.

Who is your ISP and are you connected to the Internet by a Telephone line.? If you are on a Telephone link are you operating via the main input socket or is your router plugged into an extension socket.?

Please respond again on the matter and in the meanwhile see if you can get an idea of what other folk are getting as speeds in your area..The following link should help you to find out the position because it will pin point where you are living and give street stats:-

PS..Also check that your Firefrox is up- to-date.....Click Firefox 'help' then 'About Firefox' to reveal a page that will immediately give you the answer.
I agree there is no such thing as an average performance - too many variables - that is why we need lots more info before we can suggest anything.
What nominal service speed did your ISP offer? Does your PC connect to the router with a cable or is it wireless?
How long have you seen this slow speed?
Question Author
My ISP is talktalk.....I'm connected to the internet by the 'phone...on an extension socket...I have just updated Firefox.....I think the nominal speed offer was 20Mbps(don't laugh)....the router is connected to the PC by cable.I've noticed the deteriorating speeds over the past 8-10 days. Thanks for the continued interest!!!!!
Question Author
PS wrong info the estimated speed offered was 8.5....sorry!
Can you connect PC to the main telephone socket and run speed tests again?
Question Author
Not really I'm upstairs in the back bedroom and the main phone socket is by the front door.I thought I'd get in touch with my ISP,they want to do a few speed tests over the next 24 hrs.I've done the first which was a D/load of 0.61Mbps they said that was good I can't believe it,if that's the case I don't stand a chance.
If possible, do as Howard has suggested. I feel sure we will eventually establish a reason for the drastic drop in speed.

Sorry you are being put to so much trouble and will have to further post.

Ron.
Do you know the distance between you and your telephone exchange?
It seems my typing needs to be speeded-up. Surely it didn't take 15mins for me to type my last reply..

One further question.. Is the extension socket a fixed cable item from the main socket and the cable is unlikely to have been disturbed by say a vacuum cleaner or during dusting of skirtings etc. ?

Ron.
Question Author
Hi HK the exchange is approx.2-3 miles...No need to apologise Ron I'm only too grateful you are taking the time over my problem as well as all the other AB'ers. The skirting board and socket is as you described but all appears to be ok Thanks again!!
Have you tried clicking on Tools then onto internet options?. Then deleting history and temporary internet files.
Question Author
Thanks andres but I have done that already.
You indicated earlier this evening that you ISPs have done a test and intend doing some more. So they should because 0.61 is ridiculous. Had it been 6.1 that would perhaps be good for your area. Anything below 2.0 is atrocious

Ron..
