Windows 8 Help Please

I have tried to navigate this Windows ocean with little luck. I would like to be able to access my F drive (external HD) from either the desktop or the start menu.
In fact, I would like to be able to search 'my computer' and access any disk at all!!
Can anyone help? I am not too tecchie.
