Dell Laptop Mouse with a mind!

Hi there, please can somebody shed any light on this.

 

I have a Dell Lattitude Lattitude 610 and for the last few days the mouse seems to like to wonder off of it's own accord to the top of the page and hide. When you drag the mouse down using the pad or nipple it just floats back up to the top of the screen. Only after a few minutes will it stop doing it.

It does this at least a few times in the space of an hour. Does anybody know why it's doing it and is it a software or hardware fault.

Have you tried swapping your mouse for another one?

Reinstall your drivers is an option and check for adware/viruses.

Is it an optical mouse or cable?

It's neither, it's the pad on the laptop and the nipple that I use. It has no other mouse extras.

The pointer just floats off.

It might be a sticky up-arrow key on the keyboard.

This maybe a long shot but where I work there was a guy that always had problems with the mouse pad on his laptop.

I observed him for a little while and then asked him to take his suit jacket off.  He was confused at first but found this to have solved the problem.

I explained to him that the sleeves of his jacket were the cause of the problem as they were brushing against the mouse pad and causing it to be erratic.  Bonkers.

Try removing the rubber head and cleaning out any lumps of carp that might be in there.

It's also been noted that when the CPU is under stress this can happen. Check how the CPU is doing from Taskmanager.
