Windows 8 And Security

I have just bought a Lenova G580 and my free trial of McAphee runs out in ten days. What is the best way to go next please? I had MSE, Malware Bytes and ZA firewall on my old PC and they served me well. The renewal for McAphee is £40 for the year, which I'd rather not pay if it is not necessary.Also I would like to know if anyone can recommend a good but easily understood (by a numpty!) guide to Windows 8 as it is doing my head in, bring back XP is what I say. Does anyone like W.8?? TIA -rosy

I used to have a security program,not McAphee,but something on the same lines.It cost me around £40 pounds a year.I found it would slow down my computer quite a bit,so I got rid of it. Now I depend on "MicroSofts" own security prog` I have also got installed a prog` called: SUPERantispyware,which is very good.You can find it on:

The version I have is free,but you can buy versions as you wish.The main thing about this prog` is that it does not slow down the computer. Give it a try-----could save you money.

Windows 8 comes with MSE built into to it (although it comes under the heading of windows defender in windows8), so you can just uninstall mcafee and defender will turn itself on again (check it's done so though, in control panel > windows defender) and you'll have protection.

The free version of malwarebytes is also always a good idea, but the free version doesn't actively dp anything, you have to manually run a scan every few weeks

Thank you all for your replies, they are very helpful. I will look at the link you sent Astilbus, but why oh why does no-one give you a nice booklet of instructions these days, at least to get you started.I haven't FOUND the control panel yet Chuck, and it just took about an hour to write an e.mail as everything just disappears, or the fonts change their size if I so much as blink my eyes-grrrrrr......thanks again everyone -rosy

It's a short video, rosy, and very easy to follow. It gives you back control by installing a 'my computer' icon and then off you go.... Just like
Windows 7.

I have windows 8 but use it under the win 7 shell...so easier to use methinks. However as for AV...DON'T use AVG which was installed on mine at build...it's rubbish imo for stopping lots of things on Win8, I'm having big issues on it and wish I'd never set eyes on AVG. Windows Defender is not an antivirus it's a malware et al software item. Win MSE doesn't work on Win8 unfortunately.

As to understanding Win 8 Metro UI....there are plenty of tutorials on YouTube...try googling it...but it's a matter of preference. If you can download the Win7 shell to work on your Win8 OS...then you might like it. I totally agree, bring back Win XP...SO GOOD.....why do they mess with things...why not leave well alone (sigh).

Yes, we'd all be much better if we'd just kept hitting things with stones, damn this moving forward...

Rosy, the biggest help with windows 8 is to learn to type what you want...

For example, bring up the start screen (move mouse to the bottom left of the screen and click) and then of you want the control panel just start typing control panel and it will appear for you to click on.

But CF so many people are complaining about it, no start menu et al....even the techies are saying it's a backward step! OK if you are used to touch screens but why are they supposed to be thinking about bringing BACK to start menu in Win 8.1 update....seems MS might just be thinking they cocked up this time....but who knows...only time will tell...

They're not planning on bringing the start menu back at all, they are planning on bringing back the start button, it will still open the same start screen as you currently get.

And none of the "techies" I know are moaning about it.
