I'm getting sky tv installed on Monday morning and just reading the info pack is says there needs to be a working phone socket.

Well, there is but it's upstairs. The one behind the TV and the other in the living room don't work (I don't know why).

Do you think that will be a problem?

It's one of the conditions of the contract that the box has to be plugged into a working telephone socket. At least, it used to be, and I don't think that's changed. It's a long time since I had it installed, but I think the engineer needs to connect the box to the phone line to finish the setup.
software upgrades and charges for purchasing pay per view go up and down the phoneline so yes it will be a problem.
I think you will find that part of the agreement is that a telephone line has to be close by for connection to the Sky box, so the answer to your question is yes there will be a problem, also any data etc will not be able to be downloaded to your Sky box without a telephone line. They may say sorry and walk away, they can also tell if the telephone line is not being used.

Why would they care if I actually have a phone plugged into it or not?
One of my tenants faced this problem last year, told the engineer that the phone line was due to be installed / connected a few days later, sky installed, still no phone line in, no problems.
I think they connect it to the box where the phone line comes into the house rather than sockets in the room. Have you got that downstairs EV?

I'm just confused as to why KJN mentioned they can tell if there is a phone being used. I don't often have the phone plugged in because I don't use it and it just gets full of messages from no win no fee companies. But I can't see how that really matters, as long as the phone line works.

The one in my bedroom works. That where my router is plugged in. But the two downstairs don't. I've no idea where it comes into the house.

Think I'd better just ring them to check as I've booked a day off work and don't want it to be wasted.
Mines not plugged into a phone socket. You could maybe get one of those phone line extension things a d then you would have a working phone line in the room where you want the Sky box to go.
Prudie, my Sky box is connected to an extension and not to the main box. You can disconnect the phoneline and they won't immediately notice but its art of the agreement to do it and software box updates do come don the phoneline. If you get a problem with the box and call the helpline, IIRC they can tell if it is connected to the phoneline or not

It's fine, they said it doesn't matter what room it's in and if worst came to worst they'd just set it up without the connecting to the phoneline. Thanks for the answers all.

Wow things have changed then,it was always a condition that the phone line had to be connected to the sky box. What I meant re they also can tell if the telephone line is not being used was that if it was not connected to the sky box they could tell. Nothing quoted by me re " phone being used" rgds
