Can anyone tell me how to get rid of desktop icons that can't be dragged to the recycle bin? Thanks.

It's worked on some of them but the rest just give me options to arrange or refresh etc. No delete option. Any ideas?
what icons?
Right-click on a blank area of the desktop and choose Properties. Click the Desktop tab, then click Customise Desktop at the bottom. This'll give you a page that lets you remove the My Documents, My Computer, My Network Places and Internet Explorer icons.
If you want to make further adjustments, Microsoft's free TweakUI may help http://tinyurl.com/2meyw
If you're trying to remove something else and it won't go, it might be virus/trojan related, and you're advised to follow the usual antivirus / spyware removal procedures.

fo3nix they were to do with dating, online casino and ringtones and stuff. Just crap I'm not interested in. I think they were linked to Packard Bell but they seem to have disappeared now. Hope it stays that way.
that sort of thing should be readily deleted.

if it was other types, such as my documents icon or the recycle bin itself etc, then i was going to suggest ralph's very suggestions.

tweakUI (for XP especially) does all manner of wonders. it should be included in the box (as well as the ClearType wizard).
