I have a Kodak printer less than a year old. It keeps telling me "out of paper", and refusing to print, despite being loaded. Why? Any help received with thanks.

Some sensor getting confused ?
May be worth opening everyting that can be opened, rotating everything that can be rotated, putting it all back together and then hoping ?
If I knew the model & number of your printer I would willingly do a search for a possible answer.

As a starter, I would try a re-installation from the disc which came with the printer.

where do i find the "my computer" icon?
eh?
Question Author
the instructions for downloading driver installation tell me to click on the my computer icon.
Ah right. No longer called 'My Computer' just 'Computer'

Click on Start Menu, 'Computer' should be listed there on the right side.
If it's not visibly listed when you click 'Start' it will mean a few steps to find the file to open.:-

Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Computer.

next question ... what is a firmware file?
Pity you didn't say the reason for your latest posting because it may have helped me to answer somewhat more helpful than this :-

My interpretation of firmware is 'software which has been embedded into hardware'.

I am almost confusing myself and await hearing further from you.
