For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.You need to associate the relevant files type(s) to the program(s) you want to open them with. It's not a difficult task but we can't provide you with exact instructions unless we know what the attachments are. Are they, for example, images in the jpeg format or perhaps something like Excel spreadsheets?
If you're not sure what the attachments are, please tell us the file extension(s). e.g. if an attachment is shown as 'mydog.jpg', it's the 'jpg' bit that we need to know about.

OK, I got the wrong end of the stick!
You need a pdf reader to open the files. You can use this

or even better imo

Save one of the attachments to somewhere on your hard drive. Go to its location and right-click on it. Select 'Open With > Choose Program'. Click on the program that you use to read PDF files. (It's probably Adobe Reader, unless you've installed an alternative, such as Foxit or SumatraPDF). Put a tick in the box where it says 'Always use this program . . .'. Then the PDF should open correctly, as should all PDF attachments in your emails.
It could simply be that someone has sent you some corrupt files.
However I'd try installing SumatraPDF, which can often open files which Adobe Reader doesn't like:

(If you're asked whether SumatraPDF should be your default pdf viewer, allow it).
