I entered this posting a week ago and said I thought it was my AVG antivirus was giving me this humming noise on the computer.

However, I changed AVG to MSE and noise is bad tonight. Am partially hearing so if I can hear the noise what must it be like for fully hearing.

Can anybody tell me what the humming is about. I am on old computer with monitor - I can actually feel it in the hard drive. Thanks for any answers. Conne

Could it be a collection of dust and dirt on one of the fans causing it to vibrate badly??
My computer made a humming noise for a while, just before the hard drive gave up the ghost.
Make sure you have everything backed up onto disc, just in case.
I lost 5 years of photos when mine went.
Most likely it is the fan. Turn everything off and open the box. give everything it a dust, ideally with a dust buster can of compressed air or a paint brush. Check the fan as it might be touching the case. Just settle it in properly and put the cover back on. Hope it helps. If not at least you've done a good job as dust in an old machine can burn it out.
Sounds like your fan. Mine started sounding like an aeroplane taking off. I took the side off and gently hoovered it.
Very good advice to back everything up too. Get a memory stick and drop all your photos and documents on it.

Sorry to hear you lost so much Wordist, do you still have the old hard drive? I feel sure the photos can still be retrieved, you just need to find someone locally who can do that for you.
Have you got a microphone plugged in?
Sorry, just re read your OP.
Can you be specific about the sound, are we talking about a hum coming from the speakers or a sound coming from the computer itself?
Software such as AVG would not cause a humming noise. It is almost certainly a clogged/dirty fan. Carefully clean the ones inside the PC case with a soft brush or can of compressed air as suggested in the posts above.

Forget to mention wouldn't have a clue as to how to clean and dust - the hard drive is the old one measures up thingmajig up to my knee. Good night again.
I'll look in again tomorrow Conne.
I'm guessing a noisy fan or a wire has dropped onto a fan. A Hard disk does not make that much noise and survive.
In the meantime, Sleep Well.

Well just to update - there was a lot of dust outside the fans on the hard drive so I dusted them off not thinking it was doing a lot of good but hey humming has died down. TG. LOL
