Problem With Blackberry Email Set Up

I am trying to set up email on my husband's new BB 9720. I have inputted the email address and password correctly, but get the message
"your device encountered a problem with this application's server".
I have done a security wipe and taken the battery out, but no joy. He had a different BB previously with no problems regarding this.
I have googled and found many questions on a similar subject on other forums, but none of the answers are really relevant or make a lot of sense to me.
His previous BB died so can't be used to transfer info via any desktop manager software.
Can anyone help, please?
