Somehow, I have done something that increases in depth the taskbar (think that's the name) running across the bottom of the screen. Usually, it's just a thin strip. Now, it takes up nigh-on a quarter of the screen. How can I restore it to its normal size?

Hover your cursor on the top of the taskbar and when it changes into a two headed arrow drag it down to the size you want.
If you right click on the Taskbar and uncheck Lock The Taskbar, put the cursor on the edge of the Taskbar, and draw it back into the position you want it (The cursor should change to the two-headed variety, if I've described it right). Right click on the Taskbar again and re-check Lock The Taskbar, and it should be OK.
