If I try to download Apps from the App Store, I get a message my account is not valid in the US store and I need to switch to the UK store.

I neither know, nor care, what that means, but ...

Does anyone know what I need to do?

Open the App Store and scroll to the bottom of the page. Bottom right will be a button with a US flag displayed, click that, then choose the UK flag from the list provided
